Birth and Phantom Hound at Eli’s Mile High Club
Managed to catch two of three acts over at Eli’s on Friday evening, both providing some great tunes at Oakland’s most esteemed and venerable music venue. The headliners, Birth, debuted a new lineup with Andrew Niven on drums, Conor Riley on Keys/Lead Vocals, Graham Norwood on Bass, and Tom Draper on guitar. They delivered a great set with tunes that also channeled a bit of 90’s grunge.
I arrived a bit late and didn’t catch the opener, (Spiral Electric) but just in time for the start of Phantom Hounds hardcore psyche rock set, a wall of sound that seemed like there must have been more people on stage that just guitarist Jake Navarra, bassist Carter Ochi, and drummer Waqar Khan. The power trio ripped through a solid set that had the crowd pumped and cheering throughout.
